The boys teams got off to a bit of a rough start against Bentley this year, but have played better of late and posted their first victory via the JV team, winning 14-12 against Black Pine Circle. The varsity team played well in the nightcap against the BPC varsity squad, but came up short by two points when a last second shot didn’t fall. The JV team has another near win against Raskob, falling by two in a 23-21 setback. Next up for the Timberwolves, Oakland Hebrew Day School and Prospect Sierra on the road.
The girls team this year came very close to securing their first victory on the road against Redwood Day School, but a late charge by RDS erased a 17-10 deficit and denied the lady Timberwolves a w in the win column. Upcoming games against Athenian and Oakland Hebrew Day School should put the girls to the test.
We are off and running as basketball season gets under way.
We are happy to announce that we will have a 4th/5th grade co-ed team this year. The first practice is Wednesday, November 30 at 12:15. if you are at all interested, come to the first meeting–no obligation.
Boys and girls team’s practice are in full swing. Boys are practicing on MW from 3:30-5 and girls at the same time on TTH.
Go Timberwolves!
Flag Football
The flag football team ended their season with a tight 35-27 setback against a resurgent Windrush team. Tehiyah was limited to its 6th and 7th grade players as the 8th graders were off to Washington. It was an exciting game as were just about all their games this year. Itai as the quarterback and Andrew as his primary receiver shined in particular against Windrush.
Overall it was a fantastic season for the Timberwolves. The team secured two wins this year, including a thrilling comeback against Prospect Sierra (see separate story below) and were in just about every game they played this year, despite consistently playing bigger schools. Much credit has to go to coach Christian Ross who inspired his players to believe in themselves and to never leave anything on the field.
Soccer
The Timberwolf soccer team finally broke through in their next to the last game of the year against Windrush, scoring 9 goals in a 9-3 victory. 5 of those were scored by forward Jordan de Medina, while Emma Regev scored twice, and Andrew Saxe once. Francis Campbell opened the scoring with her first goal of the year. Congratulations to coach Larry Madden for seeing the fruits of the hard work he has put into the team this season. Their last game of the year was just as impressive–though in a different way. Down to 9 players against a 15 player Bentley squad, Tehiyah valiantly hung in the match, keeping it close up until halftime. Complicating matters was the huge Bentley field–as wide as Tassajara Field is long. Nonetheless, nary one complaint came from the Tehiyah side, even as Bentley continued to score goals after it was clear that Tehiyah had given all it had. Well done Timberwolves.
If there were a scoreboard on the Cerrito Vista Park field, and had you looked up to it, it would have read Propect Sierra 14, Tehiyah 0 with only minutes left in the first half. Prospect Sierra had drove the field with little resistance in their first two possessions, capping both drives with touchdowns. Their taller receivers had gotten the better of the determined, but undersized Tehiyah secondary, and one could not have been blamed for thinking that perhaps Tehiyah was in for a long afternoon under a grey, cloud covered sky.
Driving again into Tehiyah territory, looking for a score that would all but end the game before the referee had even whistled the end of the first half, the Prospect Sierra quarterback lofted a pass into the middle of the field.
Instead of finding but another Prospect Sierra receiver, it found the waiting arms of 3rd year Tehiyah player Dylan Earp. Dylan, avoiding two, three would be tacklers, cut to the right and to the sideline and did not stop till the head judge signaled touchdown. Instead of being down by three scores, Tehiyah had cut the lead in half, and then to 14-8 when Noam Marcus completed a pass for a two point conversion. The Tehiyah defense held after PS got the ball back, and at halftime it was a one score game.
The defense, seemingly helpless against the Prospect Sierra passing attack, would not allow another score in the second half. Many stars shined bright on defense–Aaron Morrill barely deflected a 4th down pass away to end one drive and Jonathan Sutter nearly had an interception of his own. But no one shone brighter than Eli Mizock, relentless in tracking down PS running backs and pulling their flags for either losses or to stop drives.
Midway through the second half, Tehiyah would pull even. Following completions to Dylan and Eli, a perfectly thrown fade pass from Noam Marcus was hauled in by Ethan Ostrow for a huge gain all the way down to the goal line. It was Ethan’s first game back since rejoining the team, and he made his presence felt, making at least a half dozen catches, including Tehiyah’s second touchdown to tie the game shortly after his big play to get them near the endzone. Suddenly, the game was tied.
It would stay that way for now after the point after the touchdown failed. Briefly, the momentum seemed to shift back to PS’s favor. A couple of long runs found them deep into Tehiyah territory, mere yards away from regaining the lead. But the Tehiyah defense would stiffen in the red-zone, and again Prospect Sierra would be turned away.
The goal line stand left Tehiyah with time for one more drive, one last chance to complete what would be a remarkable comeback. Mixing short passes and runs, the Timberwolves drove the ball down passed mid-field and into Prospect Sierra territory. Again, Ethan would come up with the big play, beating a PS defender, bringing down a deftly thrown pass from Noam, and sprinting into the end zone with the go-ahead score.
Prospect Sierra could only run two more plays, including a kick return after the Tehiyah score. The Prospect Sierra kick returner made a couple of defenders miss, and for a moment there was the possibility that Tehiyah’s heroic comeback might all be for naught. But again, Eli was there, ripping off the returner’s flag as he tried to go by him. A final desperation pass play on the last play of the game was broken up by the Tehiyah secondary.
A game that seemed lost not very long after it had started, had through the determination and clutch performances of several players turned into one of the greatest victories in Tehiyah athletic history. Coach Christian Ross’ Timberwolves had distinguished themselves on many levels in securing a much deserved 20-14 victory.
The win left Tehiyah’s record at 2-1 with three more games on the schedule. Next up for Tehiyah, in what may be their biggest challenge of the year, Athenian on Wednesday, October 26 in scenic Danville.
In a fast paced game with lots of action on both sides, Tehiyah scored its first three goals of the year before ultimately succumbing to Bentley 5-3 in a game played on Monday, October 17 at Tassajara Park.
After previously dropping its first match of year to Black Pine Circle, the Timberwolves looked to turn things around against Bentley. Jordan de Medina and Emma Regev, last year’s Tehiyah athletes of the year, played a spirited match, with Jordan scoring two goals, one on an excellent assist from Emma, and Emma herself scoring the team’s first goal (and Tehiyah’s first of the season) in the first half. Also having fine games were Lily Goldman, Jack Rosenberg, Emile Givental, Pele-Or Greenberg and, with a very nice defensive effort, 1st year player Mia Goldberg. Next up for Tehiyah: Park Day School at Tassajara Park on Thursday, October 20.
Led by quarterback Noam Marcus’ three touchdown passes, and a number of acrobatic receptions by Dylan Earp, the Timberwolves marched to their first victory of the 2011 season by getting past East Bay School for Boys 22-14. A sterling effort by the offensive line led by Kieran Kemp, Aaron Morrill, Jack Rosenberg and Devra Shollinbeck, gave Marcus the time he needed to find Earp, Andrew Saxe and Eli Mizock for touchdowns. Avi Peltz had an outstanding game at tight end as well, securing a number of grabs including a tough one in traffic for a two point-conversion for an important score at the end of the game. The defense held East Bay to one score until the last play of the game. Andrew Saxe has an interception run back for a touchdown called back after a questionable roughing the passer call.
The win evened the football’s record to 1-1 after a tight opening game loss to Bentley at Tassajara Park. Tehiyah was in it up to the last moment, but ran out of time before they could complete their comeback. Marcus and Itai Klaidman-Rinat had fine games at quarterback and freshman running back Ezra Chaltiel broke off a number of fine runs in the loss.
The fall season for Tehiyah Athletics got off to a great start with first practices taking place the last week of August. Tehiyah has had the fortune to line up two outstanding coaches this year for Flag Football and Soccer.
Christian Ross, a Kinesiology major at San Francisco State will serve as the head coach for the football team this season. Christian brings his combination of coaching experience and youthful enthusiasm to the team.
Larry Madden, our new soccer coach, has previously filled in at Tehiyah as a PE teacher and has an impressive track record of experience playing and coaching soccer. Welcome to our new coaches, and best of luck to them and all of our Tehiyah student-athletes in this upcoming season.
